June 12, 2012 The Weekly Link Up

0 Doc Rivers just lost in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, and I guess that would give a somewhat reasonable reason as to why he has to lash out at the Wizards organization….(Washington Post)
0 SB Nation reports that the Wizards also plan on working out 6 players on Tuesday in preparation for the NBA Draft. Does this mean we’re going to trade for another pick in this draft?
0 Speaking of potential draft picks, you’ve got to love it when Thomas Robinson, in an interview with SI.com, claims that he wants to “kill everyone.” Kinda makes me want to draft him….
0 In a bit of Hoyas and Wizards related news, which is rare, fellow Bishop O’Connell alum Jason Clark is planning on working out for Washington. Hats off, Mr. Clark! (CSN Washington)
0 I’d normally never link anything related to the Toronto Raptors onto this website, but it has to do with Georgetown forward Hollis Thompson, so why not? (RaptorsHQ)
0 According to ESPN.com’s Big East blog, Georgetown is a Top 5 coaching job in the conference. I’d have to completely agree with that assessment, except that academic standards may bring it down a notch. I’d still rank it above Louisville.
0 Terrapin fans, embrace Jake Layman! This kid has a bright future, as the future Terrapin power forward just landed himself a spot on the U-18 USA basketball roster. #Imcised (SB Nation)
0 Former Maryland Terrapins legend Walt Williams, who was the original Gary Williams pupil, is still managing to do great things in the community (He might be my favorite Terp). (Baltimore Sun)

I believe Doc was correct in his comments (for the most part). Using Blatche was a poor example, however. As much as I would consider Eddie Jordan a “blah-ho-hum coach”, to say Andray Blatche was merely “given minutes” is totally untrue. I used to fume that he wasn’t getting minutes for most of 4 YEARS. So turns out Blatche proved me wrong when he finally got big mins. However, I DO agree that the Wiz slowed their own development by not having one or 2 veterans on the team that were still “better” than the young guys. There is much less reason for Blatche/Seraphin/McGee to listen to Turiaf, than 4 the 2 & Vesely listen to Nene. And THAT worked! No reason for Young and Crawford to listen to Mason…but they’d prob listen to a Ray Allen-type. Ya know? I think we have gone thru many years in the last 20 where it seems like the key goal in the players’ lives is making sure they don’t have to wait in line at the hottest club and have a roped off table with bottle of Alizee, as opposed to winning. I get a strong sense that with this new mix of players, THAT ain’t the goal ANYMORE. I sense THIS group now will be following WALL’S lead, cuz he’s a vet now. And I’m CONVINCED he’s about winning. And god, I hope I’m right

Thanks for your comment! I think you make some great points and can share your sense of frustration in thinking Andray deserved more minutes earlier on in his career. It used to blow my mind as to why we wouldn’t play him more, but like you said now we know better.
Your point on the type of veterans we had around the young guys is extremely valid too. While the players we had around (Mo Evans, Mason Jr., Turiaf, etc.,) who were veterans in the league they weren’t impact players on the roster. Not the most ideal role models for young, talented prospects.
There is a sense that there has been a culture change in the locker room. The play was more inspired down the stretch than at any other point during the season. It’ll be interesting to see how the team responds to year two of Wittman because I too think Wall is a leader and this roster buys into him as such.
